amalfi

The Amalfi coast is unique in the world for its natural beauty, breath-taking views, colours and characteristic friendliness. Small picturesque fishing villages are scattered in clusters, upon the front face of the mountain. Villas, churches and corner shops are built cut out of the rock, on top of each other climbing up the mountain from the water's edge. All buildings are surrounded by kept gardens and terraces, narrow pebbled streets and endless steps, lemon trees, grape and olive vine’s and the perfume of nature.

It is a presence rich in history and culture, which is still alive today, among so many artistic memories of the past. Amalfi introduced instruments, such as the compass, and ideas such as the fundamentals of navigation, to the West. From these roots, originated the friendly hospitality and generosity of the people from the Coast, today as yesterday, thoughtful towards visitors and travellers. For those who visit Amalfi for the first time, or for those who are returning, we have prepared this Web Guide "Divine Coast" which has been designed to illustrate some of the most beautiful scenery of the Amalfi Coast, as well as providing detailed descriptions, in-depth history, art and cultural material.

The main town of the coast is, of course, Amalfi, and this makes a good base for exploring the area. Other popular destinations are Ravello and Positano. Ravello is famous for its beautiful gardens perched high in the mountains above the sea, and for its classical music concerts. Positano is on the coast to the west of Amalfi, and is a traditionally 'posh' resort, where incredibly well-dressed tourists wander past exclusive boutiques before dining at even more exclusive restaurants.

Tourism is of prime importance in the area, and is the major employer. Consequently, almost everyone you meet will be friendly, obliging, speak very good English and will do their best to help you.
